Digital Equipment Consulting WLL CO and University of Skikda join forces to explore, study, and develop innovative IoT solutions using ThingsBoard CE and ESP32 microcontrollers with Zephyr RTOS.

Project Overview

This initiative aims to establish a dedicated Research and Development (R&D) group focused on exploring, studying, and developing innovative IoT solutions. The project leverages ThingsBoard Community Edition (CE) as the IoT platform and ESP32 microcontrollers running Zephyr RTOS for firmware development.

The primary objective is to cultivate deep technical expertise in these platforms, enabling future customization, integration, and deployment of tailored IoT solutions for various industry sectors. The collaboration fosters academic-industry synergy, providing students and researchers with hands-on experience in cutting-edge IoT technologies.

Research & Development Phases

Phase 1: 0-2 Months

Planning and Setup

Define project scope, establish collaboration agreements, set up infrastructure and resources, formalize partnership, allocate lab space, procure hardware, organize kickoff meeting.

Phase 2: 2-4 Months

Training and Knowledge Building

Build foundational knowledge of selected technologies, develop core competencies in IoT architecture, conduct workshops on ThingsBoard CE, ESP32 development, and Zephyr RTOS fundamentals.

Phase 3: 4-8 Months

Prototype Development

Apply learned skills to build functional IoT prototypes, integrate ESP32 + Zephyr devices with ThingsBoard CE, develop end-to-end IoT solutions (temperature monitoring, smart lighting), implement OTA updates and security features.

Phase 4: 8-12 Months

Research and Innovation

Advance R&D in custom IoT solutions, explore optimization, scalability, and security, develop solution-specific enhancements, evaluate performance metrics, document findings and publish research articles.

Phase 5: 12+ Months

Evaluation and Expansion

Assess outcomes and plan for future growth, explore commercialization or real-world deployment, host demo days, gather feedback, identify potential for productization or patents, scale team for new projects.
